This past month, “Tiger King”, a new true-crime series was released on Netflix. This show has been a tremendous success, showcasing the strange and relatively unknown world of big cat breeding. The show focuses on the rivalry between Joe Exotic and Carole Baskin, two big cat owners. Both parties engage in slander against each other, but one claim by Joe has stuck out for millions of viewers, Carole Baskin killed her husband and fed him to her tigers.

Carole Baskin’s first husband, Don Lewis, disappeared under mysterious circumstances in August of 1997, the night before he was due to fly to Costa Rica. Though Lewis was declared dead in 2002, his disappearance has yet to be solved, but from the looks of it, all signs point to Baskin. In the months leading up to the disappearance, both Baskin and Lewis expressed concerns about their marriage, prompting Lewis to ask Baskin for a divorce. Lewis was a known serial cheater, and often used his trips to Costa Rica as an opportunity to be unfaithful to Baskin, and Baskin described feelings of being “trapped” in her marriage. One month before his disappearance Lewis requested a restraining order against Baskin claiming she threatened to kill him and hid his gun to prevent self-protection. All the signs point to Carole Baskin when looking at the disappearance/murder.

Here is Ashleigh Nicholson’s, a self-described “Tiger King” super-fan, opinion of the matter: “Carole Baskin killed her husband, point blank period.”

When asked to elaborate on why she felt this way she said, “It’s the only logical explanation for what happened to Lewis, and her mentioning putting sardine oil on a person to make tigers want to eat them was extremely suspicious.”

Many fans seem to agree with her [Nicholson]. The internet has exploded with accusations against the big cat activist, many calling for the case to be re-examined.

It’s not only strangers who have accused Baskin of murdering her husband, but her husband’s own family. Lewis’s children from his first marriage are outspoken about their belief that Baskin has something to do with the disappearance of their father. They even mention how Baskin received nearly all of their father’s assets after his disappearance.

Though the case has never been officially solved, there is an abundance of evidence to suggest that Carole Baskin killed her husband. With Lewis’s body never being found, the police department’s refusal to test her meat grinder for DNA evidence, and her sketchy comments about the sardine oil, it is safe to say Baskin is a prime suspect in Don Lewis’s disappearance.
