Michael Jordan’s $560,000 Sneakers

An iconic pair of sneakers made for and worn by arguably the best player in NBA history, Michael Jordan, was recently auctioned off for a whopping $560,000. These game-worn and signed Air Jordan sneakers were sold at Sotheby’s Auction House in New York. Jordan wore these shoes during his rookie season in 1985.

Sotheby’s claimed that there were ten online bidders fighting for these shoes in a ten-day auction. The shoes went well over the originally-estimated $150,000 price tag when a bidding war occured over the last 20 minutes of the auction.

Many say that the release of the new documentary miniseries about Michael Jordan’s incredible career, The Last Dance, had an impact on the price of the sneakers. As a record-breaking athlete, even Jordan’s sneakers broke a record as the most expensive shoes ever sold.

According to Luke Denne from NBC News, “The record-breaking price tag surpasses the $437,500 set just last year at Sotheby’s for the Nike Waffle Racing Flat ‘Moon Shoe’.”

The previously most expensive game-worn Jordan shoes were his Converse Fastbreaks, which he wore in the 1984 Olympics with the gold medal-winning USA Team. They sold for $190,000 in 2017, which topped his $104,765 Air Jordan 12’s that he wore in a 1997 NBA Finals game.

Current NBA players such as LeBron James and Kevin Durant went the same direction as Jordan by getting deals for their own branded shoes. However, none of them will leave the legacy that Michael Jordan has with his iconic career.
