Privacy Rights

My opinion on privacy rights is that social media companies should not take users’ information without permission. I think that the government should be able to use user data to an extent, because if there is a person of suspicion then the government should be allowed to find out more about that specific person; To make sure that person doesn’t pose a threat to the people around them or to themselves.

The issue of privacy rights is that there are many companies that like to gather the users information and use it to their own advantage. For example the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) said allegations about Cambridge Analytica, a data analytics firm, and how it improperly obtained the data of 87 million Facebook users. What Facebook did wrong was that it illegally harvested personal data from online personality quizzes and sold to Cambridge Analytica. Only 270,000 people took the personality quizzes, a former Cambridge Analytica worker said that the data from 50 million users was harvested without their explicit consent through their friend networks. Overall I think that a lot if not all the social media companies already are taking user data and selling it to places but we should put in more laws helping the users to protect their privacy. Tennessee privacy laws allows for a person to file for a lawsuit if there is an unreasonable intrusion upon the seclusion of another or  an unreasonable publicity given to the other’s private life, personally I think more effort could be put into this issue to protect our private lives.
