Gamescom 2019 Highlights

Gamescom+2019+Highlights

Gamescom is a gathering of video game enthusiasts and game company representatives in which companies have the opportunity to exhibit new games and hardware. This convention shares a similar look and feel with E3, another popular gaming convention. The convention also offers opportunities for businesses to connect and make new relationships and deals. Although some of the bigger video game announcements are typically conserved for E3, Gamescom can be distinguished by its more receptive nature and thus its significantly larger attendance rate. Gamescom also partners with hotel services to support gamers that travel to attend the convention and additionally secures property on which to host its various camps for gamers that seek to spend time outside. Gamescom is significantly younger than E3, setting its first event in 2009 as opposed to E3 beginning in 1995.

A plethora of new games, gameplay, trailers, and hardware has been presented and/or revealed throughout the conference. Google Stadia, the latest video game console from Google, acts as a brand new cloud-based console that is able to stream a diverse library of games. Referred to as the Netflix of video games by some, the console has a limited set of hardware and requires a subscription payment to access this library. Gamers do not have to worry about limited storage with Stadia and can play some of the newest games on it. At Gamescom, some of the biggest visually striking games have been revealed for Stadia. Some of these games include Cyberpunk 2077, Doom Eternal, and Mortal Kombat 11. Google Stadia is set to release in November this year.

Nintendo has expanded its own library for its Nintendo Switch console as well. Popular independent games such as Ori and the Blind Forest, Superhot, and Hotline Miami. Also, the Game Awards’ 2015 Game of the Year, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, will release on the Switch this Fall.

One particular game announced at E3, Marvel’s Avengers, was explored and revealed further at Gamescom 2019. The announcement was followed with official gameplay, displaying the mechanics and style of the game. The game’s beta form is set to release May 15, 2020 for PS4, Xbox One, Google Stadia and PC. Although the visual styles will share a resemblance to the Avengers movie series and comics, the voice actors will not be drawn from the actors in the movies, and the characters will not resemble the actors.

Brand new trailers and gameplay for Death Stranding, a Playstation exclusive title and the latest game from Hideo Kojima, have also been revealed at Gamescom. Kojima is known for his strong narratives and mysterious stories, and Death Stranding is no different from Kojima’s signature style. Death Stranding contains several appearances from notable actors and celebrities including Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelson, Guillermo Del Toro, Troy Baker, Léa Seydoux, and more. The game is scheduled to be released on November 8th of this year and is highly anticipated by gamers everywhere.

Gamescom is annually growing in popularity with the rise of the gaming community and continues to gain relevance as technology gains more influence over society. Since the tickets for Gamescom became sold out this year, next year’s event should be even bigger than the last.
