Kanye West released his ninth studio album, JESUS IS KING, on Oct. 25 after numerous delays. Unlike his previous hip-hop and rap albums, JESUS IS KING is a gospel album and is said to represent creativity and the pursuit of new ideas. It has received numerous mixed reviews from celebrities, news outlets and fans alike after a long and delayed process that started last year. Despite the album drawing significant political attention from the public, its focus and intentions are religious.
Since September of 2018, ’Ye’s latest album has faced much turmoil surrounding its release. Known then as Yandhi, his album has faced dramatic changes. The artwork and title for Yandhi pointed to an album that would be similar to Yeezus, Kanye’s sixth studio album that contained darker elements and belonged more to the rap and hip-hop genre. It was originally slated for a September 2018 release; however, Kanye did not release the album and began recording in Uganda to enhance his creativity. West’s wife, Kim Kardashian, later tweeted that it would release on Black Friday, but this did not happen. Currently, unless it is cancelled or delayed indefinitely for the time being, the album title of Yandhi was scrapped for JESUS IS KING due to Kanye’s dramatic change in music style.
West’s change in style began earlier this year when he began holding numerous Sunday Services. He provided music for his audiences, and it sounded different from his previous works and indicated much change within Kanye. In September of 2019, Kardashian announced the album would release on Sep. 27, but it missed this release date with Kardashian claiming it would release on Sep. 29 instead. Once again, JESUS IS KING was delayed; however, numerous listening parties occurred throughout the month of October. Kanye finally announced it would release on Oct. 25 at midnight. As usual, Kanye missed this release as well.
’Ye tweeted at 1:18 a.m.,
“To my fans
Thank you for being loyal & patient
We are specifically fixing mixes on “Everything We Need” “Follow God” & “Water”
We not going to sleep until this album is out!”
JESUS IS KING finally released just a few hours later and has been perceived differently by many. As many of us know, Kanye isn’t Kanye without a little controversy. Within the past year, Kanye has openly spoken about his bipolar disorder and support for President Donald Trump while holding Sunday Services across the nation. While some are embracing this “new Kanye,” others miss “the old Kanye.”
The album has been interpreted by liberals and conservatives in positive and negative perspectives, with political identification influencing some opinions.
Donald Trump Jr. decided to comment on the album, tweeting “Kanye West is cracking the culture code.
@kanyewest’s new album #JesusIsKing is the epitome of fearless creativity and ‘dangerous, unapproved’ ideas.
Leftists always try to silence those who are speaking truth. They’re waging a war on our family and culture.
Kanye is a pioneer.”
