Out of the 18 candidates running for president in the 2020 election, not one amounts to Bernie Sanders. His authenticity has remained consistent throughout his political career that began in 1971 when he was elected as a member of the Liberty Union Party. However, the political movements he was involved in beforehand defined his political career and dedication. At a young age, he became interested in politics, but became heavily involved when he went to the University of Chicago and joined the Young People’s Socialist League and the Civil Rights Movement as a student for the Congress of Racial Equality. At the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, a demonstration for African American economic rights, he was arrested along with the other 1963 protesters and fined $205.15 in today’s equivalent. Sanders had also taken part in many anti-war and student empowerment strikes. So far in his political career, he has held the position of mayor of Burlington, VT in 1981, representative for VT for the House of Representatives in 1990, and has remained a member of the U.S. Senate since 2006. An outstanding factor of Sander’s long-time profession has been the staticity of his beliefs and morals.
Of course, many Americans view him as an elderly socialist, however, his priorities of enhancing the quality of life for American citizens should not go overlooked. The United States economy already has aspects of socialism implemented into it. Welfare, public transportation, and social security are only some of the socialist ideals that have been integrated into American life. Furthermore, if Sanders won the presidential election, he would not have the power to completely change our economic system, and he has no intention to. For he has already focused on revising and presenting bills into the system that match his intentions in office. His heavy push for gun regulations, college financial support, and health care for all has been prevalent throughout his campaign. In comparison to the other candidates running, Sanders has remained to be the most transparent with his beliefs and goals, which is something everyone should look for in an individual that holds a political position. His experience and success surpasses all democratic and republican candidates, which makes him the most qualified to be president of the United States.
