Problems with Pageants in Toddlers and Tiaras

Toddlers and Tiaras is a reality television show airing on the channel TLC. The show follows young children and their parents as the girls compete in beauty pageants. Beauty pageants are competitions between females in categories such as beauty, talent, pageant walk, and interview. The girls are judged and scored by 3-6 judges. Usually, though, when the girls are as young as the toddlers on Toddlers and Tiaras, the interview process is omitted. This means that these young girls are only scored based on what the judges see on stage. It is highly unfair for these children to be pitted against each other and under what their mothers make them do in order to win.

There are two types of pageants that these girls can compete in. The options are glitz or natural. In Toddlers and Tiaras, the camera only captures glitz pageants because they are seen as more intense, competitive, and entertaining. The glitz pageant process consists of little girls, ages six months to 10 years, dressing up in two to three outfits in order to wow the judges and win the crown, trophy, and cash prize. So, what are the issues surrounding the pageants seen on this television show?

The issue with these pageants is that they are negatively affecting the girls that compete in them. For example, the girls are taught that looks and loads of makeup are what determines their value. The parents of these girls force them to go to extremes to appear perfect. The girls typically go through getting spray tans, wearing flippers (fake teeth), and hair extensions. In order to have energy on stage, the girls consume tons of sugar and caffeine.

As said in “Controversies to Hit Toddlers and Tiaras”, “…their secret to keeping her energy up on stage: Drinking lots of “Go-Go juice” (a mix of Mountain Dew and the energy drink Red Bull), and eating lots of “pageant crack” (really just Pixy Stix, a powdered candy).”

The show Toddlers and Tiaras creates an unhealthy lifestyle for young girls. The girls are led to believe that looks are everything and going to extremes with makeup, hair, and clothes is the only way to achieve beauty.
