2020 Film Industry Looks to Beat 2019

2019 was definitely a booming time for the film industry. Many successful movies were produced, including The Lion King, the seventh highest grossing film; Frozen 2, the highest grossing animated movie; and Avengers: Endgame, which became the highest grossing movie of all time. 2019 was also a great year for streaming platforms. Disney Plus and Apple TV+ both made their debut in November of that year; these streaming services have already left their mark on society in the few months they have been launched. Regardless of the backlash these platforms received, they were successful in their launch due to the desire for more entertainment.

With an impressive movie line up and such accomplished streaming services, it seems unlikely that 2020 can live up to the same standard. Thankfully, though, this year promises equally as great of a list, including further releases from the beloved Marvel Universe, Disney, and many others. Moreover, there is plenty of buzz regarding one specific streaming platform to come in 2020, already being received more positively than its competitors. 2019 was a monumental year for the film industry, regardless, 2020 is already proving to be a year worthy of equal, if not more praise.

A few movies have already been released within the first month. This includes Dolittle, Underwater, Bad Boys for Life, and The Gentlemen, and many thriller films like The Turning, The Grudge, and Gretel and Hansel. So far, these films have done decently well, with Bad Boys for Life bringing in a little over $148 million and leading the box office for three weekends in a row, according to CNBC. Also, Dolittle brought in about $126 million worldwide.

But that is just the first month. According to FirstShowing.net, there are numerous highly anticipated movies to come later this year. Disney is releasing the live action Mulan, adding to the many live action remakes of Disney films in the past few years. They are also releasing a new Disney Pixar movie titled Onward, which stars Tom Holland and Chris Pratt. Marvel is also pitching in more movies with the long-awaited Black Widow film being released in May along with The Eternals in November. DC comics are releasing a new Wonder Woman movie titled Wonder Woman 1984 along with Birds of Prey: The Emancipation of Harley Quinn and Cyborg.

There are also numerous sequels to movies coming out this year, such as Top Gun: Maverick, Peter Rabbit 2:The Runaway, Fast and Furious 9, A Quiet Place: Part II, and the 26th movie in the James Bond franchise, No Time to Die.

Specifically, we are looking forward most to Marvel’s Black Widow movie and DC film’s Birds of Prey: The Emancipation of Harley Quinn.

After the soaring success of Avengers: Endgame, fans are anxiously awaiting the release of Black Widow, telling the background story of one of the characters by the name of Natasha Romanoff. Considering how important this movie is to Marvel’s plot and character development, it wouldn’t be a surprise if this movie became one of the highest grossing movies, maybe even beating Avengers: Endgame.

Suicide Squad was released in 2016 and was an instant success, being anticipated for months prior to the release. It can be foreshadowed that Birds of Prey: The Emancipation of Harley Quinn will be received in a similar form. Harley Quinn became an instant staple of the DC Universe. Margot Robbie has possibly been regarded as having one of the best portrayals of a secondary character; thus, flinging not only the actress, but the character into the limelight. Overall, the DC film Birds of Prey: The Emancipation of Harley Quinn, may possibly be one of the most successful movies of 2020 and is worthy of the praise it is receiving, not only now, but in the future.

The public is hopeful for the film industry in 2020, not only for the movies but for one streaming platform in particular. HBO Max is the most highly anticipated streaming service of 2020, and rightfully so. HBO Max will entertain the world with shows such as Friends, The Big Bang Theory, South Park, and the DC Comics movies. Streaming services of the past, such as Netflix, Hulu, and even Disney Plus are having a run for their money with the debut of this platform in May 2020.

Streaming services and films of 2019 were extremely commemorative; nevertheless, 2020, if it lives up to the hype, should be regarded even higher. There is plenty to await in 2020 which will definitely make it a great year for the film industry overall.
