10 Must-Watch Shows on Netflix

If you’re looking for a show to watch on Netflix I’ve made a list of what I think are the best shows to watch. Half of them are 1 season shows that are worth a binge, which can most likely be watched in one day, the others are multi-season shows to watch in time. Personally, I always watch something while doing homework, cleaning my room, etc. and I usually struggle to find something interesting.

1 Season Shows:

Maniac | Netflix Official Site

Genre: Drama & Comedy

The time it would take to watch the whole series: Around 6 hours

Tv rating: TV-MA

Seasons: 1

Episodes: 10

Maniac, created by Patrick Sommerville, is a “mind-bending” show starring Jonah Hill and Emma Stone. The two enter a pharmaceutical drug trial, said to cure them of mental illness, the drug induces a dream-like state where they explore deep into their fears and trauma. The show depicts two separate people, with different struggles, who find themselves together fighting through odd scenarios. There are many movie references and “easter eggs” hidden in this series that makes it all the more interesting. I would recommend this show if you like other shows such as Stranger Things, Black Mirror, or Westworld.

The Last Dance

The Last Dance | Netflix Official Site

Genre: Sports & Cultural Doc.

The time it would take to watch the whole series: Around 8 hours

Tv rating: TV-MA

Seasons: 1

Episodes: 10

The Last Dance, created by Jordan Hehir, is a feel-good story about the Jordan-era Bulls, and their last championship season. The series is about Michael Jordan’s rise as one of the greatest basketball players of all time. It depicts un-shown footage of Jordan’s last championship and stars the man himself, as well as Dennis Rodman and Scottie Pippen. I would recommend this show if you like Space Jam, All American, or The NBA.

The Queen’s Gambit

The Queen’s Gambit | Netflix Official Site

Genre: Intellectual Drama

Whole series: Around 7 hours

Tv rating: TV-MA

Seasons: 1

Episodes: 7

The Queen’s Gambit, created by Scott Frank & Allan Scott, is an interesting story about an orphaned child, set through the ’50-the ’60s and her rise as the best national chess player. I know you probably read “chess” and thought man that sounds boring! but you would be wrong. This show made me think that chess was the most interesting thing for weeks, and the main character, played by Anna Taylor Joy, is only 13 when she starts her rise to chess fame. I would recommend this show if you like Peaky Blinders, Queen of Katwe, or The Crown.

Dark Tourist

Dark Tourist | Netflix Official Site

Genre: Travel & Adventure

The time it would take to watch the whole series: Around 5 hours

Tv rating: TV-MA

Seasons: 1

Episodes: 8

Dark Tourist, created and “hosted” by David Farrier is a wildly interesting travel documentary when the host takes us on a journey around the world touring unusual places. Dark Tourism is associated with tragedy and death, if you are easily frightened or squeamish I would not watch this series. Farrier takes us from places of high Radiation all the way to a haunted forest, then back to the US to get an insight on Vampires. I would recommend this show if you enjoy horror and travel documentaries.

Self Made: Inspired by the life of Madam C.J. Walker

Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker | Netflix Official Site

Genre: Inspiring

The time it would take to watch the whole series: Around 3 hours

Tv rating: TV-MA

Seasons: 1

Episodes: 4

Self Made: Inspired by the life of Madam C.J. Walker, is a feel-good series based on a true story. The cast features the wonderful Octavia Spencer and Tiffany Haddish while depicting the first Black, self-made millionaire Woman, in America. The true story is fictionalized but has a great deal of truth. It shows the ups and downs of her hard work to help bring better care to Black women and their hair. The story is truly inspiring and displays the beauty and strength of Black women and their important contributions to life. I would recommend this series if you enjoy GirlBoss, Hidden Figures, or If Beale Street Could Talk.

Multi-Season Shows:

New Girl

New Girl | Netflix Official Site

Genre: Sitcom

Tv rating: TV-MA

Seasons: 7

Average episodes in each season: 22

New Girl is a story about, Jess, the main character, is played by Zooey Deschanel. Jess is navigating her late 20’s while moving in with three men who become her best friends. Cece (Hannah Simone) is her best friend who doesn’t live with them but is always there. The group, including Nick (Jake Johnson), Winston (Lamorne Morris), Schmidt (Max Greenfield), and sometimes Coach (Damon Wayans Jr.), is a dysfunctional family of very different personalities, which brings a funny, interesting, and odd feel to this must-watch show. If you enjoy shows like Friends, The Office, or Seinfeld, this is a perfect show for you.

The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead | Netflix Official Site

Genre: Apocalypse

Tv rating: TV-MA

Seasons: 9 (10+ are on Tv)

Average episodes in each season: 16

The Walking Dead is the perfect apocalypse show. It has a major plot twist, high action scenes, and a wonderful cast. The story follows a man named Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and his abrupt awakening from a coma, into a zombie apocalypse. He wakes up to nothing but a semi-empty hospital and no idea what is going on. The plot stays interesting through every season and you never know what happens next. If you like Snowpiercer, The 100, or Lost, this show is for you.

Schitt’s Creek

Schitt’s Creek | Netflix Official Site

Genre: Sitcom

Tv rating: TV-MA

Seasons: 6

Average episodes in each season: 14

Schitt’s Creek follows a largely wealthy and privileged family who loses all of their money due to tax fraud. The family has nothing but each other and they have to learn how to live like normal people. The family is not used to regular life so it is a very laughable adventure, to say the least. The cast is wonderful and the actors who play the father and son actually are in real life. You would enjoy this show If you like Arrested Development, Superstore, or Parks and Rec.

Black Mirror

Black Mirror | Netflix Official Site

Genre: Sci-fi & Drama

Tv rating: TV-MA

Seasons: 5

Average episodes in each season: 6

Black Mirror is a show where modern inventions are twisted into dark fantasies. Every episode of the show is different and they depict a whole new conflict each time. The modern world is terrifyingly accurate, just exaggerated a bit. The show makes me want to get rid of all technology and live off the grid where it does not exist. Black Mirror is unlike any other show I’ve seen and it is slightly disturbing. If you enjoy Westworld, Futurama, or The Twilight Zone, you would enjoy this show.

Avatar the Last Airbender

Avatar the Last Airbender | Netflix Official Site

Genre: Cartoon

Tv rating: TV-Y7

Seasons: 3

Average episodes in each season: 19

Avatar the Last Airbender is a classic tv show. I watched it when I was a kid, and I know many other people did too. If you haven’t watched it I would highly recommend it, and if you have watched it before…you should rewatch it. The story is that once the one “avatar” living passes away, the same day a new one is born. The “avatar” possesses control over the 4 elements, once mastered. This story takes you on a journey with Aang, the new “avatar”. He has been missing for 100 years and is found by two common kids, Katara and Sokka, near the Southern Water Tribe’s land. They go on a journey to help Aang master the elements and defeat evil forces. If you enjoy watching childhood cartoons, this is the show for you.
